rassling action.

one week left of shoot for the year, and FPU will take a small break over xmas. but a small break doesnt mean a holiday. it means we effectively have three weeks of pre production for what will be the biggest scenes and sets for the movie to be shot in jan 2008.

the past week we completed all the wrestling scenes for the movie. shot over the space of 5 days in a warehouse in the eastern suburbs of melbourne, we survived insane heat on sunday, a flood on monday, actor illness on tuesday, an overheated and overused smoke machine on wednesday and a very sore neck/head on one of the actors after a very bad landing attempting a 360 flip on thursday.

the shots look great, the crew did wonders, the cast survived with their share of bruises and the film is going to look kick ass.

watch the clip posted below for a raw preview of what we shot.

cheers

The best laid plans...

I haven't noticed any mice on the production team but even so we've had to be extremely flexible with our plans. The shoot is well underway, and at the risk of damaging momentum we've made the hard decision to post-pone this weekend's shooting until a later time.

No easy choice what with difficulty rescheduling the location (and now stretching certain friendships & family ties quite a long way as a result of doing so), difficulty rescheduling all our cast & crew after they'd all kept this weekend free, problems because of a pre-tape we were to shoot in the location now will need to be shot elsewhere to get it done in time (that's ANOTHER location to find in a rush) some extra expenses incurred and a great deal of frustration. All in all a very messy process but ultimately for the benefit of the project.

Several outstandings were making it hard, and some dang bike ride closing off all the streets around our location made it next to impossible (how do you get 20 odd cars in if all the streets are blocked?), so it had to be done - last minute or no. Luckily (or hopefully) this won't happen again, however it has highlighted just how important constant communication between departments, commitment to the project and flexibility in management is to maintaining an efficient and professional operation of this nature. We're certainly doing it the hard way, and relying on the commitment and loyalty of the dozens of people investing their time and talent in this project.

Onwards and ever moving up - we rehearsed and rescheduled this weekend, and its given us a chance to leap ahead in our prep. Many more obstacles to overcome, but what worthwhile thing was ever created and not beset by difficulty and challenge? We're all of us, every single one on this production, pursuing a dream. It's more than a project, and I have so much faith in the people we have onboard that i can smell the magic in the air.

From Parts Unkown. The epic. Is starting to take on a life of its own. We can't hold the reigns too tight.

Chips all.

Day one and two

The shoot is now underway. There was a mad last minute dash to get everything we needed sorted and many of us managed to survive a week with no sleep and only caffiene and cigarettes as sustenance, BUT somehow we got it done. Ant and his old man (with the last minute assistance of the spectacularly incredible Mr Hatfield) built a 16 foot jib! Oriana was sewing in her sleep to build three custom wrestler costumes (including Luche Libre masks), Dante created a fresh grave and pulled all the necessary props required out of thin air with ABSOLUTELY BUGGER ALL MONEY, Joffa turned into a computer and in the most brilliant display of logistical genius I have ever witnessed got a massive convoy of cars and equipment into the city, over to Williamstown, across to Studley Park and back to the Grass Bowls club next door to my joint with breaks for fags and food along the way without any sign of a hitch, and mere hours before we were scheduled to shoot Den casually agreed to come and add his vision from behind the lens!

Three wrestlers made their first foray into the SMP family, and young Davina Cohen (who looks remarkably like Jenna, who plays the older version of Charlie) made her screen debut! The crew rose to the occassion and we hammered out 16 shots of fried gold. We even lens the begining of what will be an epic video clip for a song that our young star Jenna has written about Charlie's journey.

So it's all go from here - both barrels are blazing and without doubt there will be no sleep until we reach Brooklyn! Stay tuned for more random updates and stuff.

Woot!

Vlog 1.10 - why I should stay behind the camera

This is why the director should stay BEHIND the camera. A little cameo for the 3rd cam test that hit the cutting room floor.
